National Traffic Awareness: A Back-to-School Safety Guide

As summer comes to a close and the excitement of new school supplies fills the air, families everywhere feel a mix of anticipation and anxiety for the back-to-school season. Between packing lunches, buying backpacks, and planning schedules, August also marks an important time for safety: National Traffic Awareness Month. It’s the perfect opportunity to remind ourselves of the increased precautions we need to take as traffic levels rise with the start of the school year.

Children on the Move

  • With kids bustling to school by foot or bicycle, especially in residential areas and near schools, drivers need to be extra vigilant. Be on the lookout for young pedestrians who may dart into the road unexpectedly.

School Bus Stop Awareness

  • School buses make frequent stops, and understanding stop sign laws is crucial. Whenever a bus extends its stop sign, vehicles in both directions must come to a complete stop to keep children safe as they board or exit the bus. Never, under any circumstances, make a right turn in front of a bus from the left lane.

Navigating School Zones

  • The chaos of parents dropping off or picking up children can make school zones quite congested. Patience and alertness are key to ensuring the safety of all during these bustling periods.

Supporting Student Drivers

  • Many student drivers are hitting the roads for the first time. Grant them the space and patience they need as they learn the ropes to avoid unnecessary accidents and frustration.

Family Safety Talks

  • Parents, take the time to discuss safe practices with your children, whether they’re walking or biking. Key points include using crosswalks, wearing helmets, and staying off phones or devices while on the move.

Remember, a few mindful changes in our daily routines can make a significant difference. Safety is a shared responsibility, and National Traffic Awareness Month is an invitation to lead by example. Let’s embrace this season as a chance to refresh our habits and protect what matters most: our community.
